Human data (very limited)
- Open-label trial (inguinal hernia): Autologous bone-marrow “cell-coated” mesh (described as MSCs) vs. standard Lichtenstein showed fewer early postoperative complaints; small, single-center, open label; methods/reporting quality are limited. surgeryscience.com
- Case report: Complex incisional hernia repaired using a biologic mesh augmented with platelet-rich plasma and bone-marrow MSCs (n=1). Hypothesis-generating only. ScienceDirect
Bottom line
- Stem-cell augmentation of hernia repair is experimental. Most evidence is from animal models; human data are limited to very small, lower-quality studies without long-term recurrence outcomes. No strong clinical guideline endorses it yet.
